KVMS is an organization of Vellala community. It has been registered under the Travancore Companies Act with register No 1/1959. The population of vellala community in Kerala is around eighteen lakhs. The various names by which Vellalas are known in Kerala are Saiva Vellala, Nachinattu Vellala, Thenkasi Vellala, Karukatha Vellala, Chetti, Kumbhakonathu vellala, Thulu vellala, Nattukutta chetty , Mudaliyar, Gounder, Kounder, Eraniel Chetty, Pillai, Chetty Pillai, Chenkula vellala, Vellala Chetty etc. KVMS is the only organization representing the various vellala groups in Kerala.

Vellalas are mainly residing in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha Ernakulam, Palakkad, Kozhikodu, Wayanad and Kannur districts of Kerala. In other districts also vellalas are found here and there. The origin of Vellala in different parts of Kerala is by migration from the neighboring State of Tamil Nadu.
